Liminal Portraits, 1999 - 2000
Photography, C-type prints from negative, various sizes
Liminal Portraits are a group of large scale colour photographs, made with my mother on locations which position her in a border space between public and private.
Referencing notions of the sublime as prevalent in the history of German Romantic painting, the work aims to play with complex and contested notions of beauty, the acceptance - or denial - of the body once it no longer performs or conforms to perfection.
At the core of the work is a collaborative approach, which aims to make the subject as active as possible in her own representation.
A few of the images were presented as large scale poster works, both in the UK and the US.
