Golden Girls, 2023
Single channel video, aspect ratio 16:9 vertical, 10 min 3 sec, 4K, stereo sound
Named after the pole dancing club, where it is filmed, Golden Girls observes the minutiae of gestures and activities enacted by a group of pole dancers in the time before the club opens. The video is a reflection on women’s labour and agency, the tension between visibility and exposure. At its core, it is a film about the process of waiting, recorded during the time of preparation for the actual work to commence. It is filmed as a continuous shot, ten minutes in duration, with the camera turning continually, 360degrees around its axis. The work was inspired by Marlene Dumas’ painting ‘The Visitor’, 1995.
